Countdown to Christmas-I Don’t Like Santa

CB Christmas Badge Countdown to Christmas I Dont Like SantaBeing the ever so festive family that we are, we decided it was time to visit Santa last night. There’s an outlet mall near our village and Santa is in residence there at the moment. I have no idea how he manages to supervise the elves and tends to the reindeer when he’s sitting in a little house at Springfield’s in Spalding, Lincs but there you go. Obviously a multi-tasking, Skyping, emailing Santa for this millenium. You go Santa!

We dragged Nanny & Grandad along and paid £12.50 for the 4 of us + Little Miss. They’ve made a rather nice lit path to find Santa. Loads of little scenes, most of which had nothing to do with Santa. There was a “Spider Adventure” section! What? Spiders? Santa? Hmmmm. Have a look at some of the sparkly fun we viewed…

Protect me Daddy...I don't like Santa!

We made our way through the sparkly paths to a little garden shed which was meant to be Santa’s Grotto. As it was nearly 8:00pm there was not another soul around so there were no queues to contend with. We don’t follow the rules about having a 2 1/2 year old to sleep by 7:30. We are insane.

Santa’s helper greeted us at the door and we could see that Santa was sitting behind a screen. Little Miss took one look at him and wrapped her arms around her Daddy’s neck so tight that I thought he might have breathing problems. She buried her face in his neck and refused to look at Santa. After attempts to cajole her into just peeking at Santa she did manage to look at him but that bottom lip popped out and I feared we’d have a full on weeping session so we didn’t push it.

I thought that if I sat next to Santa that she might consider sitting with me…next to Santa. No go though! Absolutely refused. Wouldn’t even get down on the ground. A present was offered and taken and she did manage to look at Santa and say thank you. Once out in the frosty air she said “I Don’t Like Santa” but was most pleased with her present and the fact that we were done.

Thinking about it though, why would any two year old want to sit near a BIG man dressed in a GIANT red suit with a GARGANTUAN beard and is a complete and total stranger?? I wasn’t too keen to be sitting next to this one, I can assure you. We’ve done a Christmasy thing though. Score one for the Bebe Family.

_DSC9760My Little Miss is 17 months old.  We attended an event last month for EA Games.  They were promoting their childrens and family games for Christmas.  It was a very cool event…in the basement of the Vinyl Factory off Oxford Street in London.  There were attendants milling about serving bangers & mash and fish & chips in little boxes, free drinks and smoothies, an ice cream machine (we enjoyed some nice strawberry thank you very much), free sweeties…the lot!  I felt like a journalist at a press junket!  Whoop whoop.  Mind you, I had bump, bump, bumped Little Miss rather unceremoniously down several flights of stairs to get us to the event!  Such are the joys of motherhood.  Sigh…

I digress.  The event was set up with different “bedrooms” and “lounges” containing Girls Games, Boys Games, Teen Games and Family Games.  IKEA furniture, colour crayons, multiple flatscreen televisions and games galore completed the arrangement.  We gravitated to the Girls Room and as soon as Little Miss’ feet hit the floor, she made a bee-line for the Nintendo DS-Lite handheld game.  Darn it all, she actually knew what to do with that little machine despite us not having one in our household!  She picked it up (right side up I might add), pulled out the little stylus and started pecking at the screen.  The Nintendo DS-Lite was loaded with one of their new products, Flips.  Flips are children’s stories which can be plugged right in to your Nintendo DS-Lite.  The one Little Miss was playing with had an Enid Blyton Flip book installed on it.  You can turn the pages, tap on images to see animation…good lord, reading was never so fun.  Now, at 17 months, Little Miss most certainly can’t read but she was enthralled with the pages flipping and the images moving and just kept tappity tap tapping to her hearts content.  In fact, when I tried to extricate the Nintendo DS-Lite from her tiny, strong hands, there was a real struggle involved.  And some tears.

I could not get over the fact that Little Miss could operate a Nintendo DS-Lite!  She doesn’t know this thing!  How did she know what to do?  For that matter, how is she able to unlock our mobiles when we hand them to her?  Or ring outer Mongolia when she manages to snatch the land line off its hook?  (not really, but sometimes there’s at least a dial tone)  It’s a bit scary how quickly they learn all of this modern technology stuff!  Of course, I will probably be glad for it when she’s able to upload all family photos to the computer before I can get a chance and then create a mass email to all contacts with a Powerpoint presentation of our holiday.  I’m guessing she’ll be ready for this by next year!

So, Santa…if you’re listening…there’s a Little Miss in the East Midlands of England who has quite a knack for operating the Nintendo DS-Lite.  I know she’s too young for one but maybe you might consider delivering one for her…she’d be pretty excited on Christmas morning!  And thanks to EA Games for thoroughly entertaining my daughter and myself at a first-rate event.  Why can’t all events be so cool??  Has your Little Miss or Little Mister mastered the technological instruments in your household?
