Cooking inspiration from My Daddy Cooks

Back in JanuMDCbook Cooking inspiration from My Daddy Cooksary of 2010, Ella and I attended a lovely blogging event where we were to learn how to make a proper pancake. One of the bloggers we were supposed to meet at that event was Nick Coffer of My Daddy Cooks. Unfortunately Nick was unwell that day but I thought I would Google the My Daddy Cooks site to find out just who this guy was. Perusing Nick’s site I was most disappointed that I hadn’t met him that day!

Nick and his son Archie are the stars of My Daddy Cooks where they tackle family friendly recipes together in their eeny-meeny kitchen with, almost always, outstanding results. Archie is adorable, the recipes are tasty and user-friendly and the site is an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience. Eventually I did meet Nick (and Archie) and have been friends with Nick ever since. I can say, “I knew him when…”

You see, Nick is becoming quite the media darling. His site went viral within months of hitting the blogosphere, he negotiated a book deal, secured a radio show on BBC Three Counties and, just last month,  My Daddy Cooks was published for the great wide world to enjoy! Ella and I were fortunate enough, as we’re friends of Nick’s, to be invited to a Book Celebration at Fire & Stone, Covent Garden at the end of May along with some of the other lovely bloggers who have supported Nick along the way.

IMG 20110531 00610 Cooking inspiration from My Daddy CooksElla got to make a pizza of her very own along with the other very happy children and we all got to take home Nick’s GORGEOUS cookbook to add to our kitchens. I dove into the cookbook when we arrived back at home (I just love to READ cookbooks) and was so very impressed with what Nick has created. The recipes are do-able and family-friendly (your kids can cook right along with you just like Nick and Archie), the book itself is beautiful with heart-warming pictures and lovely stories to accompany and support the recipes and the book itself lies FLAT when you open it to any page which helps immensely when cooking in the kitchen.

We’ve had the pleasure of cooking and eating the Sloppy Joes recipe (for which I have awarded Nick honorary American citizenship), the Crispy Duck pancakes, the Fruity Popovers and Breakfast Pikelets which have become regular favourites in our house. Today (Father’s Day), I decided to give the FAMOUS Muddy Flourless Chocolate Cake a go to accompany the roast beef dinner at the inlaws in celebration of Father’s Day. Many of you know that I can’t eat gluten so any recipe that is flourless is a winner in my book. The recipe was pretty straightforward and I have decided, after enjoying the results, that it will become my claim to fame. GORGEOUS is barely enough to express how delightful this cake is. For this reason alone, GET THE COOKBOOK!

Thank you to Nick and his publishers, Hodder & Stoughton, for inviting us to enjoy lunch at Fire & Stone, Covent Garden and for the lovely goody bag including the My Daddy Cooks cookbook. We will be using Nick’s cookbook (and his site) for years to come. You will LOVE cooking these fabulous family recipes with your children which are sure to become regulars in your menu planning.

Real Food Festival Fun

Posted by on May 9, 2010 in Little Miss Adventures, Travelling Adventures | 6 comments

Little Miss Cafe BebeThis is a Little Miss who loves ice cream.  This is a Little Miss who had Real Food Festival Fun yesterday at Earls Court London.  We went down to see my friend Nick, of My Daddy Cooks fame, who was presenting at The Real Food Festival.

We had a near catastrophe, however, when I realised at 1:30am Saturday morning, that the tickets for the festival were no where to be found.  Hubby had had a tidy-up earlier in the week and I couldn’t find them anywhere.  I assumed that they had been relegated to the recycling bin which then led to a torch-inspired dumpster dive at ridiculous o’clock to try and find them.  Alas, nada!  Panic ensued, an email was dashed off and a rubbish night’s sleep (4 hours?) followed.  Another frantic dumpster dive in the light of day (our recycling is remarkably organised now) and a last ditch set of calls to Nick resulted in…

Me finding them where I put them…tucked up on the side of the kitchen counter so they didn’t get lost.  ARGH!!! What an idiot I am!  Couldn’t even blame it on hubby’s tidying! Darn!  That sorted, we set of for London.  Traffic being what it is in London, we arrived at Earl’s Court at 1:00pm.  When was Nick presenting?  1:00pm!  Run, run, run.  After a ridiculous loop around the inside of Earl’s Court, as we didn’t know where Nick was presenting and I wouldn’t pay £5 for the guide book, we found him.  We were 15 minutes into a 30 minute “gig” but we made it!  I found my friend Luschka of Diary of a First Child as well.  It was getting better and better!

There wasn’t much time to talk to Nick as he’s a celebrity now and all that but we did get a few minutes to chat and Little Miss warmed right up to him. We’ll see if Nick’s Archie and Little Miss can meet up one day…they could be great friends and maybe Archie could teach Little Miss to like some new foods!  Hubby, Little Miss and I negotiated hundreds of bodies to see every food item under the sun and even some pre-food items like sheep, pigs and cows.  There was even a water buffalo to top off the day!  Little Miss was in seventh heaven.

Little Miss at The Real Food Festival

Big thanks from the Cafe Bebe family to Nick of My Daddy Cooks for inviting us and The Real Food Festival for putting on such a wonderful event.  A great time was had by all…there was ice cream…need we ask for more?  I think not!

I’d love to bring your attention to some other great sites/posts that you’ve got to check out this week.  I’m all about the “blogger love” after all:

  • My Daddy Cooks is a brilliant site started by daddy Nick and his 2 year old son Archie.  Well, Nick does most of the work really but Archie is quite the little star.  Nick and Archie have been made famous through this site and Nick’s got a book deal for a series of cookbooks which is so exciting!  Nick is a “real” person though…thoroughly approachable and full of great tips and inspiration.  In addition to the vlog recipes where Nick & Archie cook in their teeny kitchen, Nick has started a Diary section where today he’s answered some “fan questions” and even better, Nick has a new FORUM!  A place to share ideas, recipes, ask questions and chat.  Great stuff Nick!
  • Muddling Along Mummy is written by a friend of mine.  Hannah, through her struggles with the technical side of blogging, has started up the “Technophobes Training Club” where she’s trying to help out others with the tricky bit of blogging.  She’s got some great tips on there for anyone who’s wanting to learn a bit more.  Thank Hannah!

Thanks for supporting some brilliant bloggers!  Now, head on over to Notes from Lapland to check out those amazing Just Vlog It entries…there can be only one!  Announcement of the winner is tomorrow! ;)

What a clever Daddy!

Posted by on Jan 13, 2010 in Blogger Love, Little Miss Adventures | 0 comments

I’ve come across a very clever Daddy who blogs at My Daddy Cooks.  His name is Nick and his 2-year-old son, Archie, is his sous-chef in their kitchen.  Nick and Archie cook together, make messes together and tidy up together.  Here’s a bit about them which was recently on BBC1 London News:

I’m quite impressed with Nick and Archie and more than a little humbled myself.  At 19 months, the most Little Miss has been allowed to do in the kitchen is break an egg and mix it.  I have a bit of an issue with mess…I’m seeking help.  On Thursday, 14 January, Little Miss and I will make another trip down to London for a special Blogging event where there will be Pancakes and Cooking!  I will blog more about it later.  Nick and Archie will be there along with Tim and Charlie of Bringing Up Charlie fame.  I’m hoping I’m not the only Mummy Blogger for a change!  I do believe these Daddies will be teaching this slightly-uptight, clean-centered Mummy a thing or two.  Stay tuned for more fun and frivolity.  In the meantime, share a little love for Nick and Archie at My Daddy Cooks.  There are some really yummy looking recipes on offer as well as a competition to win a Fun Pod!
