School Run Slummy Mummy
This picture was taken of Little Miss being Mummy. In a slobby, too-big (but getting less too-big these days) t-shirt and comfy clogs. I do almost always manage to get leggings/trousers/shorts/pants on as well but I am most definitely a slummy mummy as is evidenced by my daughter pretending to be me.
As I was bustling around the house this morning, thankfully not accompanied by nausea, trying to respond to emails, tweets and other freelance assignments and getting Little Miss ready for nursery, I ended up with no time left to make myself presentable to take Little Miss to school. I had a pair of shorts on (as well as pants), a t-shirt and my favourite way-too-big sweatshirt from Fat Face which says “FAT” on the front. I didn’t think that walking to school with “FAT” on my front was advisable so I managed to throw on another old sweatshirt that mostly matched my shorts.
Running slightly late there was no time for makeup or a zhuzh of the hair so I simply swiped on some tinted lip gloss and my sunglasses. Done. Slummy mummy uniform. I’m good at it! I felt like a royal scuz walking to school, holding Little Miss’ hand, behind some much-more-yummy-mummy who was wearing beautiful platform espadriles, cropped jeans and a tight sleeveless top on her slim frame. Bleurgh. I ended up staying for a bit at nursery as today is school photo day and I just wanted to hide in a corner! I looked like I had just rolled out of bed.
Does anyone else go to nursery/preschool/school in such a state? Do you feel the pressure to make yourself presentable? Do you find the time to make yourself presentable? I only have ONE child to get ready in the morning and, in fairness, it’s never a problem getting ready for school as she’s always up between 6:30-7:00am. She’s dressed and ready at least an hour before we have to leave minus a comb through the hair and shoes on her feet. My main problem is feeling the need to use the 90 minutes before we leave for school to do some work as opposed to getting myself ready.
Urgh…I am the School Run Slummy Mummy of Northborough! How about you? I think maybe I just need some nice tunics to throw over my ever-changing shape…and some lovely platform espadriles to make me feel pretty. What’s your school run uniform?

Sometimes I just can’t be bothered to get properly dressed, but at lease I don’t come do the school runs in my PJ’s like some of the American mothers at my school. That is one fad I just can’t wrap my head around. PJ bottoms are PJ bottoms, not proper trousers to be worn outside the house!
Big massive shades are a must for the school run! I drive to school as its about a mile and a half away so I hover outside the school gate, open the door, kiss the boy and off he goes. No playground chatter to contend with and I dont have to worry about finding a parking space…
I actually feel a bit guilty as I write this, maybe one day I’ll be organised enough to get up early enough to look fab, walk the mile and a half to school and then stand making meaningful conversation in the playground all before half 8 in the morning?
(not going to happen)

LOL, great photo. I’m a slummy-mummy constantly. My slummy mummy outfit consists of sheep-stinking-dog-haired-lamb-poo-overalls with a hint of Lenor!

My friend’s sister is an Official Slummy Mummy, she does take her children to school and worse still, COLLECTS them from school in her PJ’s, dressing gown and slippers – she actually stands in the school playground like that. Her eldest daughter is 8 and usually greets her Mummy with “oh you’re such an embarrassment!”. You’re a long way off that!!!
My friend used to drop 3 (older) children to school in her pjs and dressing gown. She pulled up and out they got.
One day the Headmaster sauntered over to ask her to come to the office to discuss an important ‘issue’ concerning the children…. she parked and had the meeting. Nothing was mentioned about her dress choice but CRINGE!!! I would have died.
I wore hubby’s baseball cap today – really bad hair day and no time to titivate!
Well, I don’t have a school run to do yet, but after verging on slummy for the first few weeks of being a mummy, I mad myself a promise that all the time I was a SAHM, I would be presentable by 9am everyday, just incase of visitors/impromptu outings.
I manage… most of the time. (somedays, you just have to accept, are made for slobbing!) I have my ‘routine’ down to 20 minutes flat (excluding shower, which has to happen before the Mr leaves for work, else I am doomed!).
As for uniform, in winter it’s generally skinny jeans with long line vest tops & cardis (I likes me some layering), and in summer, I’m all about pretty floral frocks – nothing fancy, just easy to throw on with some flip flops & a cardi, job done.
Time to start rocking your beautiful bump Mrs Bebe!!
