My Neck of the Woods

Riverside Fish & ChipsIn support of Tara Cain’s Week 10 Gallery theme: The Place in which we Live at Sticky Fingers, I am sharing with you a glimpse into some of my favourite places in my neck of the woods.  I’m stretching back 5 years on this one.  The very first weekend that I came to England (Feb. 4-6, 2005), this was the first restaurant Mark took me to to share the traditional English Fish & Chips.  I was suffering from travel sickness and was resisting the urge to vomit most of the time BUT I had never tasted anything so lovely.  I still adore Fish & Chips, particularly from the Riverside Fish & Chip shop in Stamford, Lincs which we don’t visit near as much as we used to…sigh…

The River Welland, Market DeepingThis shot is of the River Welland in Market Deeping taken from a footbridge across the river.  I took A LOT of walks into Market Deeping when I first moved here in June 2005.  I couldn’t drive & was trying to stay reasonably fit so walking the 25-30 minutes in from our village was a good choice.  This river is a gentle flowing one with the occasional angler and at least one regular pair of swans who nest & raise their family every year.  It’s a lovely place…

All Saints Church, Stamford, EnglandThis is All Saints Church.  Mark and I got married here in March 2006.  It’s a glorious church in the heart of Stamford, England and has tonnes of history attached to it.  It’s ideally meant for slightly bigger congregations so our small contingency only filled up the first 5 pews but it was lovely and beautiful (albeit a bit frigid!) and an amazing place in which to get married.

Our GardenThis is Spring in our Back Garden.  It was a few years ago as the glass-topped table you see in the foreground has since shattered into 8 billion pieces and the lovely “kissing chair” right behind it has faded to a weathered grey.  We have lost the odd bush & tree but for the most part, it’s the same.  Oh, add in a sandbox!  The tree on the right middle flowers in the Spring with fluffly pink blossoms and then rains down into the garden.  Our garden is our haven.  It’s secure and private and one of our favourite places to be.  My non-English friends think it’s our “secret garden”…I tend to agree!

Vertical Face 1, Burghley House Sculpture GardenThis is a sculpture called “Vertical Face 1″ at the Burghley House Sculpture Garden in Stamford, England.  Burghley House has always been a special place for us as it’s got acres of land to explore and walk through and a new Garden of Surprises (with amazing water features which Little Miss adores) as well as the Sculpture Garden.  This sculpture is AMAZING and Giant…most people can only reach up as high as its nostrils which always makes for a good picture as well.  Everyone who comes to visit us is dragged along on a visit to Burghley House.  I never hear any complaints, however.  Come along too if you like!

I hope this gives you a “snapshot” of my neck of the woods…I’ve so enjoyed trawling through my archives to bring it to you.  Don’t miss my next Gallery post for this week (that’s right…there will be two) coming to a blog near you…  Don’t forget to visit Tara’s Sticky Fingers every Wednesday to see all of the Gallery submissions and on Fridays for the Gallery theme announcement.

  2. Thanks Carol! It is rather beautiful where we live, isn’t it?

  3. You’re in Stamford! It’s so lovely there, kind of Cotswoldsy in appearance.
I like rutland water which isn’t too far away, though it wasn’t quite as baby friendly as I’d hoped.
    Good post.

  4. We live very near Stamford and are there at least once a week. It’s gorgeous. We go to Rutland Water a lot…I didn’t have any pictures on this computer, unfortunately, otherwise I would have added one! No, it isn’t terribly kid friendly except up at the Whitwell car park where there’s a cycle rental shop & a high-ropes course/climbing wall for older kids. I am surprised that there’s no toddler play area anywhere but there you go! Thanks for stopping by! ;)

  5. Wow your garden is gorgeous! Love the statue too

  6. Michelle (Utterlyscrummy)

Lovely garden, shame that the table was broken. What a great place for Little Miss to play. xx

  7. Wow! You do have lovely “neck in the woods”… lucky you. Esp if you also have a bluebell wood tucked away!!! Love the Fish & Chip shop photo. Lots of happy memories for you! Maggy

  8. Thanks Mrs! I need to remember the bluebells next Spring! ;)

  9. They are lovely pics Karin…. The river welland passes right past our little village – though it is only a trickle and no where near as impressive as yours!
Your church is beautiful. What an amazing place to get married.
Congrats on the MADS by the way. xx

  10. I love your garden and that sculpture is stunning – and so the world of bloggiedom contracts – I am sure I know someone who knows someone who worked there :)

  11. Thank you Sian…how very kind of you! ;) The River Welland is proper down by us…come see! ;) All Saints Church was a glorious place to get married…if only we’d had a bit of sunshine & warmth (it was 4 degrees in March, 2006) it would have been truly perfect. I didn’t feel it tho! ;)

  12. That is our favourite sculpture! Thank goodness it’s a permanent fixture as I’d really miss it! ;)

  13. Of all these lovely photos I have to say that your garden is lush and really resonates with me! I love sitting outside, having a bbq, reading with the sun on my face and now with LLC, letting her explore the outdoors. Our garden is narrow and paved over but I’m still grateful to have it and if it looked the sanctuary that yours does, I would be over the moon. Perhaps in our next house….

  14. Mmm, that virtual face is pretty scary! But your other photos are beautiful. And fish n chips sound just the ticket.

    CJ xx

  15. Oh, thanks very much…I appreciate that. This is the first year that Little Miss will be able to properly play in the garden as last year she was just getting over her fear of grass! ;) Should be a great one as long as it WARMS UP A BIT!!! ;)

  16. I could really go for some fish & chips today! Might try tomorrow when I’m in town…depending on the weather. They have a lovely outdoor seating area in which you can bask in the sun! The stuff of dreams! ;)

  17. You have a lovely garden! Such beautiful colours. A really magical place to hang out.

  18. Your neck of the woods is stunning. The gallery is throwing out some amazing pictures, it’s making me want to travel the length and breadth of the country!

  19. Thanks very much! If you’re driving along the Cambs/Lincs border, stop on in! ;)

  20. Thanks Heather…it is a lovely space! ;)

  21. Lovely photos, it’s nice to have green on your doorstep!

  22. I feel i’ve had a real tour around your life. very cool

  23. Great pictures – your garden looks lovely

  24. Ahhhh Stamford is gorgeous isn’t it? Is that the Catholic church? Because if it is then my old church choir master might have married you. He taught with my mum and then became a priest later on. He’s called Father Steven Dye. Such a nice bloke.
Your garden is gorgeous and that statue is very cool. Lovely post. :D

  25. Thanks Jo! It’s not the Catholic Church (C of E) but wow, what a small world anyway! You should come over to Burghley House and see the statue in person and we can meet for a cuppa! :) Thanks for stopping by… ;)
