Portrait of a Young Family
This is my Mom and Dad and Me in December 1974…I was 4 years old. Every year we did a “family portrait” for our family Christmas card. When the dogs were involved there was a lot of running, swearing and I know there were lots of bad pictures. Check out the outfit that my Mom and I were wearing…we were “mini me’s” of each other! I vividly remember that dress and can assure you that it was made entirely of polyester! How about my Dad’s awesome jumper? That jumper still exists…although no one has worn it for eons. My parents were 27 years old when this picture was taken. Life was good…I was still an only child! We had a very happy life…
Flash forward nearly 34 years…
This was actually our first picture as our own family! Little Miss was about 3 weeks old and we were with family on a VERY cold day out in June 2008 to Hunstanton. We were sheltered under a tent with sand swirling and cold sea air blowing. I had had Little Miss snuggled in the Baby Bjorn all morning but took her back up to the warmth and safety of the car for a nappy change and bottle feed. I was FRANTIC about the sand and the cold and was in a pretty RUBBISH mood but managed to put on a smile for this photo. I’m so glad I did as it is our very first family photo!
Flash forward nearly 2 more years…
We took our own family photo this week. Little Miss is 23 months old next week. Hubby and I have been together for 5 years. We are a happy family and love each other so. I’m rather grateful to Tara Cain’s Gallery theme for this week…Portrait. We so rarely have a family photo and even less often am I even IN the pictures. I’m always taking them! We must remember to do this more often…

Sweet…. and you’re so like your mum!
Great post, love the photos – especially the first one!
I’ve tagged you in a meme over on my blog http://b4kersgirl.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/whats-in-your-bag/
Check it out and give it a go if you fancy!
I likewise remember those “outfits” vividly! Great post and I love all the pics.
I am loving the pictures, Karin! That first picture is soooo fun! I love it! You look like your mom and your brother looks like your dad! Cute, cute! Your family pictures with Mark and Ella are just darling. How time flies!!! Great post…
Lovely to see the old photos, Karin. And I LOVE your dad’s jumper. It’s so “now”! I have something almost identical from Top Man!!
It’s so nice to make time to get a picture all together. We don’t do it enough – must make more use of the timer setting on the camera. Lovely, lovely pics x
Great pictures. Were you and your parents the support act for the Partridge Family?
Thanks my dear…I need to make a greater effort at this one!
I’ll see if I can have my Dad’s jumper brought over for you Nick!
Thanks Corinne…I loved sharing these…it’s so great to look back on old photos!
You would remember these!
Wish I still had the dress for Little Miss!
Thanks Emma…I appreciate the tag…I have already done the “What’s in my Changing Bag” challenge as a vlog post though!
Thank Tim…and I know!
I love the christmas card pic, I love the co-ordination! even your dads jumper matches!!!
And cute pic of you all, I must get some of the three of us, i have hundred so f Lo and hundreds of phil and Lo hardly any of me and just a handful of the three of us. Must try harder!
These are al lovely – must do this one day – must, must, must!
Lovely photos. I especially love the matching outfits, dads too, in the first one.
I adore the photo of you and your parents in the 70′s. Makes me feel nostalgic about the crazy fashions in the family photos I have of my childhood in the 70′s and 80′s.
I wish I had more of the actual photos on me but I only have a handful. My mom & dad have tons but they’re in the US. I need to get them to send them to me!
How funny are the matching outfits! We’d never do that now! Well…depends on the outfit really. Tiara? Maybe!
It’s a great exercise in nostalgia!
I know…I think that’s one of the pieces of advice I’d share with new mums…GET IN THE PICS. We’re always the ones TAKING the photos because we think of it. I hate that I don’t have more of Little Miss & me…might have to resort to the self-timer to see what we can come up with…
Great pics, Karin
I love the idea of a “family xmas picture” and kept meaning to do it with my brood but no-one would ever join in or we were never in the same place at the same time, miserable lot!!
I love family portraits – we do one every Christmas too
Lovely photos x
We had the same family portraits every year! I have got a copy for almost every one going back to the 60s. They are great. Love the one of your family now. “We are a happy family and love each other so” made me well up. It’s amazing to have that love. We are all so lucky!
It’s one of those things you forget to do, making a family portrait regularly. Perhaps need to put in the calender:-) When looking back it is so much fun to see.
Yeah, you really need to make a concerted effort don’t you…but it’s so worth it!
We are very lucky indeed. Thanks for the lovely words!
We managed one this year at the inlaws…I hate how I look in it but it was really nice!
Lovely pictures! I have never been brave enough to appear in our family Christmas photo…I usually make the kids dress up as santas and elves, they may never forgive me! You have prompted me to make sure we get some photos of the 6 of us together, I don’t think we even have one!
Great photos….sand and new babies even young children are a nightmare aren’t they.
Lovely one of the three of you at the bottom.
We all need to pledge to be in pictures more often. Even if we don’t like how we look/appear. We don’t want our kids to go back through our photos in 30 years and say, “well, mom took that one” and never have any evidence of our existence. Immortality!
Ugh…it was an awful day at the beach but we did get a great picture from it so that’s all that matters!
love the idea of portraits over time xx
Loving the 70′s shot…. it rocks!
Thanks Sian…I knew you would appreciate it!
