Goodnight Gorilla

One of Little Miss’ favourite books is “Goodnight Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann.  We were gifted it from my sister-in-law as she passed down her children’s board books.  It’s a tricky book for parents as there is very little text so you have to fill in the gaps on your own.  It’s quite a funny book though, as the gorilla is really a cheeky monkey who nicks the Zookeepers keys and lets out all of the animals.  They then follow the Zookeeper into his house and snuggle up for bed.  We’ve read this book a MILLION and ONE times but my Husband has made it quite the interesting book.  Want to know why?  Well, do YOU know what an armadillo says?  My husband does!

You see, as the gorilla lets out all of the animals, Little Miss chimes along with the sounds that they make.  The last animal to be let out of it’s cage is the armadillo.  So when my clever and creative husband got to that one, he said to Little Miss, “What does an armadillo say?” and then he said “Hmmm”.  My hubby decided that an armadillo says “Hmmm” in kind of a high-pitched, questioning sound.  That’s what an armadillo says!  “Hmmm!”  So now every time we read “Goodnight Gorilla”, Little Miss chimes along with all of the animal sounds and when we get to the armadillo, “Hmmm!”  We’ve even bought another book called “Just Like Me” where an armadillo tries to find other armadillos.  He says “Hmmm!” too!

Thank you Peggy Rathmann, for writing a book that has given us so much pleasure and taught us things we never knew.  Do you have a book that you read with your child that is particularly special?  Do let me know, I’d love to build our growing library with other fun stories.  Until then, “Hmmm!”- next time you see an armadillo (and that happens all the time in England) you’ll know what to say!  You’re welcome.

  1. Haven’t read that one so thanks for the great review . Our favourites – oh there are just SO many! We currently love ‘The Bold Boy’ by Malachy Doyle, ‘Pirate Dinosaurs’ by Giles Andrea (Purple Ronnie) and a really lovely book called ‘Things I Like’ by Shirley Hughes. I’ll restrict myself to those three for now or I will block up your entire blog!

  2. Thanks for the recommendations Mrs! ;) Looking forward to meeting you in a few weeks.

Hi ladies, well this is going to show my age a bit but I am here at Cafe Bebe because as a nanny -to-be I would like to be in touch with what is going on in the younger parents world!
The book I read to my daughter & she loved was Mrs. Pepperpot Stories (Red Fox Summer Reading Collections) by Alf Proysen (Author), Hilda Offen (Illustrator) .I also read them when i was younger.

Mrs Pepperpot can’t choose when she will shrink to four inches high – it just happens. But whatever she encounters, whether it be a monsterous mousetrap, a crafty fox or a gigantic mountain of ice cream, little Mrs Pepperpot will always come out on top.

Great for parents to read to younger children or older children to read themselves it will bring their imaginations alive,I haven’t came across a child yet that hasn’t enjoyed Mrs Pepperpots escapades.

But I love and so did everyone of my children was Dr Suess Green Eggs and Ham.
This book is not only funny, but also teaches us to try new things and not cast things away until we have experienced them. This book is extremely positive and any child to read themselves or to have it read to them will thouroughly enjoy the rhymes.
But the other titles are just as fab.

    (my own little piece!)

  4. That’s a new book for us – will have to get it. We currently love “The Gruffalo” and “A Squash and a Squeeze”, both by Julia Donaldson.

  5. So many books to try. I used to love Mrs Pepperpot, thank you whitty999 for reminding me. Both my girls love ‘Big Red Bath’ by Julia Jarman and illustrated by Adrian Reynolds. We make animal noises too! There’s a review on my blog.
