Changing Bag Dilema

Aug 19, 2009 by

I have a changing bag dilema.  We have a really useful and heavily used changing bag which came with Little Miss’ first travel system, Graco Quattro Tour Deluxe Travel System.  It’s taken us around the East Midlands, to America and back and out and about every day in our neck of the woods.  It’s now on its last legs.  The stuffing is coming out, the plastic lining is ripping and catching in the zip, it’s losing its mojo!  It makes me a bit sad as it’s been a loyal helper for the last 14 months!  And it was Little Miss’ first changing bag.  I’m a bit emotionally attached to it, as you can see.  But it’s time…

I’ve just purchased a new bag from a “mumpreneur” that I found on Twitter, My Funny Bunny.  The bag is a brilliant “mummy” bag…super soft, lovely large handles, useful for Mummy and baby.  But I still will need a larger bag which will assist us on longer days out and for big trips like the one we have coming up in October…to America again.  I am a bag-aholic.  I see a changing bag hanging off someone’s pushchair and after checking out what pushchair they have, I scope out the bag as well.  I see Pink Lining bags in the shops and think “Oh…what a pretty bag…I want that one!”.  Our bank balance and future makes this a non-starter.  Would you like to see a few that I am coveting?  Sure you would…bet you like one or two as well!

Yes, these are a few of the bags that I would love to have.  Toting around all of Little Miss’ little life.  And I do tote around a lot for this girl!  Here is a list of the contents of Little Miss’ Graco Changing Bag:  sunscreen, travel cutlery case, Little Red Medical Book, Neosporin (US version of Savlon), plasters, Carex Hand gel, change of clothes, container of biscuits, container of raisins/rice cakes, Sudocrem, nappies, Pampers Sensitive Skin wipes, Milton wipes, muslins, bib, Arnica cream, E45 cream, sippy cup, Momma’s stuff (purse, lippy, dummy covers, keys, phone, sunglasses), dummy, USA bandana

It’s choc-a-block!  So, what’s in your changing bag?

  1. Can you believe I never had a changing bag?? Just used to carry stuff around in my hand bag. Unbelievable I know and not quite sure how I did it. BTW – did a post exactly the same as this just yesterday – ‘What’s in Your bag?’ – unfortunately rather a lot of cr*p it turns out!!

  2. We had a graco bag too. I am in love with the OiOi bags. Determined to have one next time.

  3. Oooh…sorry Mrs…totally didn’t know you did that! Show’s how up on my reader I am! I swear I didn’t nick your idea. ;)

  4. OiOi has the luuuuvvvvliest bags…too bad I don’t make any money to afford one!

  5. My changing bag, huummm let me think… I used to carry quite a lot around with my first boy, then the second arrived and it became a suitcase! So eventually I managed to cut it down to this:
One changing mat, a couple of nappy bags, 4 nappies (2 each, hopefully down to 2 soon when the potty training fairy is visiting, where the hell is she right now??!!), a pocket size suncream, arnica, tea tree oil cream, calendula cream, my purse, set of keys, phone, lip balm and THAT’S IT! Apart from the unwanted items that can’t bugger off like crushed biscuits, yucky raisins covered in biscuits crumbs and dust and 100 receipts…
The rule now is: don’t carry the stuff shop can provide in case of a storm or pooh leakage. Experience proved that rare are the times we ended up in a place that didn’t sell food, nappies or clothes. I live my life on the edge all the time but that’s a small price to pay to travel lighter… :)

  6. Of course I forgot to say that I do carry a small food bag for drinks and snacks… I do feed them sometimes really… :)

  7. oh I love the Oi Oi bags too… TKMAXX sometime has great ones in store, you just need to keep checking though

  8. OMG I forgot the WIPES!!! I would be nothing without the wipes!!!

  9. I am exactly the same – pretty bags are my downfall!

When I was choosing a nappy bag, I stamped my feet & said if I’ve gotta take it everywhere, everyday for the next who knows how long, it’s gotta look nice!!

    So Mr caved & bought me a ju-ju be http://www.ju-ju-be.com/our_products.asp?prodid=between – it’s my one little mummy luxury & i LOVE it :)

Also really like that JJ Cole one up there^^^…oh dear!

  10. Not fair…I’m coveting your bag Leslieanne! :(

  11. I will admit, I was as big of a bag hag with my diaper bags as I am with my mommy bags!
Probably my FAVORITE diaper bag (that didn’t look like a diaper bag) was the oi oi hobo. I like the strap and the bottle pockets. I NEED bottle pockets (for sippies and my water bottle.) It was pretty light weight, too/

Since I had two little ones and a Baby Jogger, for outings I loved the Skip Hop Duo. The Skip Hops aren’t “pretty”, but the Hubs would happily carry it for me. (SCORE!)

My biggest mommy luxury was my Not Rational Hansel in a lovely diesel leather. I still have this bag, and use it as a carry on or when we’re travelling. And I’ll tell you a secret – I bought most of my diaper bags during sample sales (if they were leather) or I bought them via my yahoo babybags board (these mamas were bag crazier than me – and what do you do if you buy an expensive bag – and then hate it??? They sold them to other mamas who wanted to try them.), plus a lot of online shops were active on the board and gave great discounts….

With my youngest daughter I used the free Huggies one that I got from Boots when I joined their baby club. Was large enough for everything, came with a change mat and was functional. Not a joy to look at though LOL

With my first born I purchased a gorgeous change bag, that I still have, from The Baby Factory in NZ. It had loads of fab pockets, zip off side bags – complete with a detachable strap, and looked fabulous. I cannot bear to part with it. My youngest daughter is now almost 5 and my eldest is 11. The bag has been to 4 countries and served me well for 3 children. I love it. I am keeping it, you never know when I might need it again ;o)

  13. Michelle,
I have a definite addiction to changing bags. Thank goodness I have a REASON to want (and get) more now! ;)
